R.I.P. Naomi Sims

Naomi Sims was what we consider the 1st black supermodel. She paved the way for the Naomi Campbells and Tyra Banks we know now.

She also was an entrepreneur and used her name to carry her much further than her modeling. I remember her cosmetics and fragrance lines. She also has a very successful wig line.

You will be missed and you are appreciated for helping to mainstream black beauty.

I remember staring at the covers of these and other magazines with her image back in the day. I so admired her grace and beauty. For a brown girl growing up in Cleveland, she represented what was achievable. Thank you, Ms. Naomi.

Why haven't I heard more about her? This is my first time hearing her name.

Here's a nice, in-depth article about her life.

"Why haven't I heard more about her? This is my first time hearing her name."

I've heard of her before, but had a basic knowledge of who she was. The article I linked has a lot more info I didn't know, but there's still more I'd love to learn.

There were quite a few Black models in the '60s, and the information on them is very limited.
